Brazil’s Federal Police arrested on Tuesday the former chief of operations of the Federal District Military Police, Colonel Jorge Eduardo Naime, for omission of his duties during the assault by supporters of Jair Bolsonaro on several institutions on January 8.

Naime was arrested by order of the Supreme Court in the framework of the ‘Lesa Pátria’ operation, which has already led to the arrest of dozens of law enforcement officers, including military police – in reserve and active duty – members of the Armed Forces, and even a firefighter, either for omission of duties, or for encouraging or financing the attacks on the Esplanade of the Ministries.

In Naime’s case, he requested a leave of absence on the eve of the attacks, which was granted. However, on the 8th, he had to rush to the scene to manage the operation against the attackers. A day later he was dismissed from his post on suspicion of having delayed the action of the troops, thus allowing the escape of many of those who participated in the attacks, details ‘O Globo’.

He has always denied these accusations, claiming that he requested a leave of several days after «intense work during the year 2022» and that once on the scene of the events he complied with the protocols and allowed «hundreds of arrests» to be carried out, even being wounded in one leg, according to a statement sent to the news portal Metropoles.

Who is also under arrest for alleged omission of his duties is the ex-secretary of Security of the Federal District, Anderson Torres. Bolsonaro’s last former Minister of Justice was in the United States at the time of the attacks. Upon his return he was removed from office and imprisoned in Brasilia.

Tuesday’s arrest corresponds to the fifth phase of the ‘Lesa Pátria’ operation, with which arrest warrants have been issued throughout the country not only against law enforcement officers, but also against businessmen for financing the rallies prior to the attacks, civilians, former political candidates and even a nephew of Bolsonaro himself.
