The President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, has assured that the Army has taken control of the Lake Inguri area, previously under the control of jihadist groups, as part of anti-terrorist operations in the province of Cabo Delgado (north).
Nyusi has detailed that the jihadists used the lake to fish and resupply their militiamen present in the area, while he applauded the »bravery» of the security forces, without commenting on casualties during the operations, as reported by the radio station Radio Mozambique.
During the last months there has been an improvement of the security conditions in the province, due to the reinforcement of the operations with the support of the troops of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Rwandan special forces.
Cabo Delgado has been the scene since October 2017 of attacks carried out by Islamist militiamen known as Al Shabaab, unrelated to the homonymous group operating in Somalia with ties to Al Qaeda. Since mid-2019 they have been mostly claimed by ISCA, which has stepped up its actions since March 2020.
