At least 97 people have died in Sudan since the outbreak this week of fighting between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in the capital, Khartoum, and other parts of the country, according to the Sudanese Doctors Committee.
This organization has put the number of dead and 942 wounded at 97, most of them in the Sudanese capital, according to a statement shared on its profile on the social network Facebook.
Thus, the Committee of Doctors of the country has again appealed to »stop this war immediately» and allow »safe passages to be opened to evacuate» the people who are trapped and wounded.
The organization has also warned that hospitals and health facilities are not military shelters. Their violation is a crime against humanity, values and morals, and all treaties and covenants prohibit their violation,» the letter reads.
The Committee issued this statement hours after the World Health Organization (WHO) put the number of dead at 83 and more than 1,100 wounded since the fighting began last Thursday. The WHO, which has reminded all parties to the conflict of their obligations under international humanitarian law, said it is monitoring needs in the affected cities to ensure that resources are directed to where they are most needed.
Sudan’s main civilian organizations and political parties have called in unison over the weekend not only for an end to the fighting between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), but also for an end to the »militarization» that has dominated »the public space» in the country for decades and, in particular, since the overthrow four years ago of dictator Omar al Bashir following a revolution in which civilians were an instrumental part.
The African country was ruled before the outbreak of fighting by a junta led by General Abdelfatá al Burhan who had as his ‘number two’ the military leader of the RSF, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, alias ‘Hemedti’. Disagreements between the two over paramilitary integration into a future unified army eventually degenerated into this conflict.
