The Moroccan Social Front has announced the call for demonstrations on February 20 to protest against the increase in the prices of basic commodities and to commemorate the anniversary of the mobilizations of the February 20 Movement.
The national coordinator of the Moroccan Social Front, Yunes Ferachin, has stressed that this call «responds to the frustration and anger of citizens at the increase in the prices of basic consumer products» and its effect on the purchasing power of the majority of the population, reports the Moroccan portal Hespress.
‘All against high prices and in defense of freedoms’ is the slogan chosen for these new demonstrations called in different Moroccan cities.
In particular, they denounce the «outrageous prices» of all products in general and of food and fuel in particular «while rentiers and predatory monopolies continue to get richer».
The Moroccan Social Front also denounces the passivity of the authorities despite the social emergency and demands an increase in salaries, lower taxes and better living conditions for the workers. They also call for the re-nationalization of the Société Anonyme Marocaine de l’Industrie de Réfinerie (SAMIR) and the defense of food sovereignty.
In 2011 social protests erupted in Morocco in the wake of the so-called Arab Spring led by the February 20 Movement. The political system responded with lukewarm reforms and in the following elections political Islamism gained weight.
