Republicans on the U.S. House Oversight Committee have asked Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, for information about his business activities amid suspicions that he may have benefited from his father’s business contacts.
Hunter has until February 22 to send the requested information, otherwise the Republicans could demand his presence before the committee. In addition to him, they have also requested references to his partner, Eric Schwerin and the brother of the head of the White House, James Biden, reports CBS.
«The American people deserve transparency and accountability about the influence peddling of the Biden family,» said the chairman of this committee, Republican James Comer, who claims that these alleged irregularities could have «compromised national security».
Hunter Biden’s defense has advanced that it will comply with these demands, but has made it clear that this parliamentary committee «lacks a legitimate legislative purpose» to request the records of his client, who is nothing more than a «private citizen», according to NBC.
Hunter Biden has also been in the news this week for a session of this commission in which three senior Twitter officials testified over alleged accusations that Twitter and other social networks had acted to hide from their platforms references to a report by the tabloid ‘New York Post’ about the contents of one of their laptops.
Yoel Roth, Twitter’s former chief security officer, acknowledged that while the company made a mistake in handling that information, they had «limited information» and that at first glance there were «many similarities» to the Russian leak in the 2016 presidential campaign.
Those stories and rumors about the alleged contents of Hunter’s laptop were some of the trump cards used by Trump during the election campaign, and even in the television debates, to attack Joe Biden, whom he insistently reminded of all these theories.
With the arrival of Donald Trump to the White House, the accusations against Hunter have been a constant, to such an extent that the tycoon had to face his first impeachment trial after it became known that he pressured the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, to find compromising information about Biden’s son and his participation in Burisma, a Ukrainian natural gas company.
