The Chinese government will grant emergency humanitarian assistance to Turkey and Syria worth 40 million yuan (5.5 million euros) to deal with the devastation caused by the succession of earthquakes that have struck the border of the two countries since Monday, killing more than 4,000 people.

This was announced by the deputy director of China’s International Development Cooperation Agency, Deng Boqing, in statements reported by ‘China News’, where he detailed that the Chinese government has «immediately» activated its emergency humanitarian assistance mechanism.

This batch of aid will include the dispatch of heavy urban rescue equipment, medical equipment and the supply of relief materials needed in cases of disaster.

In addition, it has announced that it will accelerate the implementation of ongoing food aid projects for Syria, the newspaper reported.

The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has decided to provide the Turkish Red Crescent Society and the Syrian Red Crescent Society, respectively, with 186,000 euros in emergency humanitarian assistance, according to CCTV.

Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping sent messages of condolences to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, respectively, for the death of thousands of people in both countries as a result of the earthquakes registered this Monday on the common border.

Xi has expressed on behalf of the Chinese government and people their «deepest condolences» to the families of the deceased, as well as to the injured, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement reported by Xinhua.

Thus, it has maintained that under the leadership of Erdogan and Al Assad, the two countries and their people «will surely overcome the disaster and rebuild their homes at an early date.»

More than 4,300 people have been killed by the succession of earthquakes registered on Monday in southern Turkey, near the border with Syria, according to data provided by the authorities of both countries and the ‘white helmets’ that serve in Syrian opposition areas, although it is feared that the figure may increase in the coming hours because thousands of people have been injured and many are still trapped in the rubble.
