Mentally ill policeman shoots dead Odisha health counselor in India

The health counselor of the Indian state of Odisha, in eastern India, Naba Kisore Das, died Sunday in a hospital several hours after being shot in the chest by a police officer who was undergoing treatment for mental problems. The policeman has been arrested.

The politician was on his way to visit a health program in Brajrajnagar town. When he was greeting local citizens after getting out of his car, he was shot twice by police sub-inspector Gopalkrushna Das, Indian television NDTV reported.

The minister was airlifted to Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar, where he eventually died due to the severity of his injuries. The medical report indicates that a bullet hit his heart.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his sadness at the «unfortunate death of Odisha councilor Mr. Naba Kishore Das Ji». «My condolences to his family at this tragic time. Peace,» Modi tweeted.

Constable Gopal Das was undergoing psychiatric treatment for a bipolar disorder, according to Indian news agency PTI. He was also in charge of security for the adviser’s visit.
