Republican leader Kevin McCarthy stalled again Thursday and failed to get the votes needed to become speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, a stalemate that repeats after eight rounds of voting over three consecutive days.
In this second round of voting held Thursday, the eighth in three days, Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Oklahoma elect Josh Brecheen endorsed fellow Republican Rep. Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, while Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz again repeated his vote for former President Donald Trump.
Thus, the vote was as follows: McCarthy garnered 201 votes, while Republican Representative Byron Donalds obtained 17 votes. Finally, the Democratic representative Hakeem Jeffries obtained 212 ‘yeses’, a result that has not changed for the blues.
Gaetz cast in the seventh round a favorable vote for Trump despite the fact that he has shown no interest in the seat. It is not necessary to be a member of the House to be elected. On the other hand, 19 Republicans have endorsed candidate Byron Donald in the seventh round of voting.
In the previous ballots, the 20 Republicans opposed to supporting McCarthy have all backed Donalds. Also, Congresswoman Victoria Spartz decided to abstain from voting in two consecutive rounds. Democrats, on the other hand, remain united in their decision to have Hakeem Jeffries represent them.
McCarthy is poised to win the presidency and said Thursday that he does not mind being elected for a short term. In the context of the seventh and eighth ballots, he said he will begin to recapture votes once they reach an agreement.
The House of Representatives cannot continue its business until its Speaker is elected. U.S. President Joe Biden has previously called the stalemate in the House «shameful.»
