French authorities have referred on Tuesday to the recent end of the «interim government» of opposition leader Juan Guaidó stating that it is not up to Paris to comment on this type of decision taken by the «democratic forces of Venezuela», which are free to «organize themselves as they see fit».
The French Foreign Ministry has stressed in statements to Europa Press that the only way to resolve the deep crisis that Venezuela is going through is with the holding in 2024 of «free, democratic and internationally observed presidential elections».
«France supports the democratic forces in Venezuela that are organizing themselves as they wish. It is not for us to comment on their decisions in this area,» the Foreign Ministry said.
In this regard, they have recalled the intervention of the French President, Emmanuel Macron, last November 11 at the Paris Peace Forum, where he delved into the importance of acting in favor of the negotiation process taking place in Mexico between the government of his counterpart, Nicolas Maduro, and the opposition.
Guaidó, who came to be recognized by more than half a hundred countries as «interim president» in 2019 following his self-proclamation after not recognizing the results of the 2018 presidential election, has seen his political weight dwindle to such an extent that most of the deputies of the 2015 National Assembly voted at the end of December to end his «mandate».
The opposition has argued its decision for the lack of progress in terms of democracy and Human Rights under his «government». For Guaidó it is a «leap into the void» that ultimately benefits a Maduro, who seems to be back on the international chessboard, as seen at the Climate Summit in Egypt.
