China’s President Xi Jinping acknowledged on Saturday that the Asian giant has entered a new phase of its response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic, in which he admitted that some challenges will persist, without directly alluding to the explosion of infections in recent weeks.
«Since COVID-19 arrived, we have put citizens above all else,» Xi defended in a year-end speech in which he referred for the second time — the first was on Friday — to the new strategy adopted by the Chinese authorities.
In this sense, he said that the government has «adapted» its response according to an «evolving situation», to «protect the life and health of the population in the best possible way», according to the excerpts released by official media.
The President acknowledged that these last few years have not been easy and there have been unprecedented challenges, but he thanked the citizens, especially medical workers, for their efforts.
