Peruvian authorities updated Friday afternoon the total death toll following the demonstrations that broke out in Peru after the impeachment and arrest of former president Pedro Castillo, bringing the total number of people killed to 22.

The Regional Health Directorate of the department of Junin has announced the death of two people in clashes between demonstrators and the police in the district of Pichanaqui, in the province of Chanchamayo, in the center of the country.

In addition, the health authority of Junin has reported that 52 people have been injured so far, of which 43 are civilians and nine are police officers.

Thus, the total death toll in Peru has risen to 22, of which 13 have taken place after the declaration of emergency decreed by the Peruvian Government last Thursday.

The latest deaths come in the midst of strong protests that are taking place across Peru following the impeachment and arrest of former President Castillo on December 7. Protesters are calling on Boluarte to dissolve Congress and call for new general elections.

The Peruvian government has decreed a national state of emergency for a period of 30 days in response to the protests in support of Castillo. Likewise, the Executive has declared an emergency in the National Road Network, allowing the Army to take to the streets in an effort to protect the strategic points of the country.
