The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, has insisted this Saturday to the Peruvian Congress to approve «without pretexts» the electoral advance requested by the president to stop the strong protests in the country after the arrest of former president Pedro Castillo, a request rejected last night by the chamber.

«The Congress must reflect and work for the country, 83 percent of the population wants to advance elections», explained Boluarte in reference to one of the latest surveys of the Institute of Peruvian Studies (IEP), published in the newspaper ‘La República’.

«So do not look for pretexts not to advance the elections, vote for the country, do not hide behind abstention», he said.

The constitutional reform proposed by Boluarte aimed at bringing forward the general elections to December 2023, and the shortening of the presidential and parliamentary mandates to April 30 of the following year.

The measure has only received the support of 49 congressmen, while another 33 have expressed their opposition and 25 more have abstained, falling far short of the numbers required to push through a constitutional reform, according to RPP radio station.

«The people should be sincere with the people, they should know who they want to stay. Abstention is the same as no», Boluarte declared this Saturday after the meeting of his Council of Ministers, in an appearance in which he asked the Legislature not to fall into «political revenge» and to help work to find a solution, according to another excerpt of his speech reported by ‘La Republica’.
