The Peruvian Interior Ministry has announced the opening of an investigation by its own agency and another by the Public Prosecutor’s Office to clarify the circumstances of the death of protester Víctor Raúl Santisteban de Yacsavilca, who died on Saturday during violent riots between demonstrators and police officers.
It was later reported that Santiesteban’s autopsy reveals that he died due to a skull fracture caused by a «hard blunt object». The man, 55 years old, had a traumatic brain injury (TEC), as well as contusion and encephalic laceration. The Ministry of the Interior has expressed its «condolences and sympathy to the relatives» of the deceased.
A sister of the deceased, Elizabeth Santisteban, has denied that he died from the impact of a stone and has called for an investigation into the case, reports the newspaper ‘La República’.
«Tell the truth. That is all I ask (…). We will go to the last consequences because the videos are there. I am addressing the president, as a woman, a sister, that she look at us and help us, because it is not enough to say a heartfelt condolence. We also want a healthy justice», she affirmed in declarations to the press.
In addition, 34 demonstrators have been injured, some of them with critical prognosis, according to the Ombudsman’s Office. «Yesterday, in Lima, according to information gathered by the Ombudsman’s Office, 13 civilians were injured, 21 police officers were injured, one died and 19 people were detained for the alleged crime of rioting,» explained a spokesman for the Ombudsman’s Office, Luis Alvarado, quoted by RPP radio station.
Some 60 demonstrators have been killed since protests broke out against Peruvian President Dilma Boluarte, whom the demonstrators are demanding her resignation and the dissolution of the current Congress.
