The Government of Ecuador has reduced to seven the death toll from the landslide that hit the Ecuadorian municipality of Alausi, located in the country’s hinterland, on Sunday night, hours after authorities confirmed 16 deaths.
According to the last balance of the Secretariat of Risk Management, there are seven confirmed deaths, 23 injured people and 46 missing. In addition, 32 people have been rescued.
The alerts were activated shortly before 22.00 (local time), following a series of warnings about an incident that affected more than 160 homes and attributed to heavy rains. The Secretariat of Risk Management has put the number of people affected at 500 and more than 160 houses damaged.
In addition, 25 percent of the public lighting network has been affected, as well as 60 percent of the drinking water service and 20 percent of the sewage system.
The Ecuadorian President, Guillermo Lasso, has pointed out the importance of continuing with the rescue processes, and has asked all citizens to evacuate the affected areas »to attend this emergency in the best way possible».
