The former president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, has sent a letter to the leader of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, in which he thanked him for his support »from day one», when he was arrested after announcing the dissolution of Congress and the establishment of a government of exception.
From this cell in which I can only resist with longing for the prompt freedom of my people, I greet you with all the strength and hope to thank you and all the Mexican people for all the support to the just struggles of Peru and the permanent support to my family», reads the letter.
Castillo has pointed out that his »freedom is secondary»: »The true freedom that must be supported, dear brother president, is that of our people, today repressed and with dozens of compatriots shot dead», he said.
In addition, he has also thanked for the help given to his wife and children, who were granted asylum in Lima in December; and has informed him that the Argentine lawyer Guido Croxatto will be in charge of his defense.
Allow me that the international strategy of my defense is going to be led by Argentine lawyer Guido Croxatto. I have entrusted him with this special task, which he will carry out with special commitment, it is not the first time that Argentine lawyers are committed to this people», reads the letter.
López Obrador, who has shared the letter through his social networks, has explained that he has met with Guido Croxatto, lawyer of Castillo, »the president who was illegally removed from office and is unjustly in prison suffering from the classism and racism that sadly prevails in Peru».
Castillo is currently serving 36 months in pre-trial detention, as part of investigations for the alleged crime of rebellion and for various alleged corruption offenses.
