Several players of the Peruvian national soccer team have clashed on Monday night with National Police officers outside the hotel where they are staying in Madrid, where they will play this Tuesday a friendly match with Morocco, as confirmed to Europa Press by police sources.
According to the same sources, the confrontation originated when members of the Police Intervention Unit (UIP) mobilized by the notable concentration of people in front of the hotel interposed themselves, to avoid an avalanche, between the fans and the footballers, who came to greet.
At that moment, a player from Peru hit an agent in the eye, who needed medical assistance from Summa 112. The sources indicated that this player was arrested and taken to a police station in Chamartín.
The sources also said that the altercation took place at around 9.30 p.m., upon the team’s arrival at the NH Collection Eurobuilding hotel, located in the Chamartín district.
They also pointed out that some hours before, at around 7 p.m., supporters of the Peruvian national team began to arrive at the gates of the Madrid hotel and estimated that 300 fans had gathered there, including some carrying flares.
The incident resulted in the arrest of Pedro Gallese, the goalkeeper of the Peruvian national team, who was taken to a police station after being denounced by an agent and was released without charge, according to Peruvian authorities.
Thus, the goalkeeper was released from the police station after 3:00 a.m. and was taken back to the hotel where the players are staying.
The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has indicated that the consulate in Madrid has accompanied the player at all times in the police station to make statements and that »it will watch over the physical integrity of all the players of the national team». On the other hand, it has announced that »it will request the immediate clarification of the facts to the authorities concerned».
