The Azerbaijani government on Friday accused Armenia of firing on its positions near the border, although Yerevan has charged Baku for «continuing to spread disinformation» following the ceasefire reached on September 15 after their latest clashes.

The Azeri Defense Ministry said in a statement published on its website that «during the night of November 3-4, units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in positions in the direction of Azizli and Yujari, used weapons of various calibers for five hours against positions of the Azeri Army in Yellija and Mollabayramli».

«The Azerbaijani Army units located in these directions took appropriate response measures,» he has stressed, without pronouncing on possible casualties.

Immediately afterwards, the Armenian Defense Ministry has accused Baku of «continuing to spread disinformation» and stressed that the Armenian Army «has not opened fire on Azeri fighting positions in the eastern part of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.»

Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to a ceasefire on September 15 and in early October agreed to commit to the UN Charter and the 1991 Alma Ata Declaration, through which both countries recognize each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. Following this, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian stressed before Parliament that he expects the peace treaty with Azerbaijan to be signed before the end of the year.

Both countries have been involved in several clashes in recent years over the control of Nagorno-Karabakh, a territory with a majority Armenian population which has been the focus of conflict since it decided to separate in 1988 from the region of Azerbaijan integrated into the Soviet Union.
