Former UK Health Minister Matt Hancock has been the victim of an assault on the London Underground by a man in his 60s who has been arrested and remains in police custody.
British Transport Police (BTP) has reported that the first tip-off it received about the incident alerted to a man being «assaulted and harassed» at Westminster station early Tuesday morning.
Following this, the authorities have arrested a 61-year-old man as the main suspect in the assault, although the investigation is still ongoing, according to the British channel Sky News.
According to a spokesman for the former minister, the incident was «very aggressive and unpleasant», and has ventured that the assailant was a «dangerous conspiracy theorist». He also thanked the police and BTP officers for their work.
«Fortunately, this type of behavior is a rare occurrence, but it is instances like this that re-emphasize the importance of stopping unfounded misinformation that causes so much harm,» he added.
Hancock served as health minister from 2019 until 2021, when he resigned after it emerged that he had breached restrictions during the pandemic to get together with another woman with whom he was allegedly in an extramarital affair.
In late 2022 he stirred up controversy again by participating in the show ‘I’m A Celebrity…. Get Me Out of Here!’, a survival reality show where he participated along with other celebrities and for which the British Conservative Party decided to suspend him as an MP.
