St. Vincent and the Grenadines assumed the pro tempore presidency of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) on Tuesday, after Argentina completed the handover at the summit held these days in Buenos Aires.
The Argentine president, Alberto Fernandez, has handed over the pro tempore presidency of CELAC to the prime minister of San Vicente, Ralph Gonsalves, who has assumed the position for the period 2023, as reported by the agency Télam.
Fernandez made the handover with his counterpart from St. Vincent and the Grenadines during the closing of the VII Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Buenos Aires.
«St. Vincent and the Grenadines is one of the smallest countries but we have been working on this presidency for years,» said Gonsalves after receiving the assignment. «We are going to work very closely with all the states, that’s what we are looking for. We want to capitalize on the great work done by Mexico and Argentina, and we want to rely on you to help us in this very important task,» he added.
For his part, the Argentinean president emphasized that there are still «many challenges ahead». «We have listened to everyone’s words, all of them interesting, all of them valuable, and we have to face these challenges together,» he said at the close of the CELAC summit.
