The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, has left the door open on Tuesday to a possible candidacy for the next elections to be held in the Latin American country in 2025.
«The Constitution of Ecuador allows reelection only once. That will be in 2025, and at least in Washington one is emboldened a little and I can tell you that I will not shirk the responsibility of continuing a mandate,» Lasso said from the United States during a talk with the Inter-American Dialogue think-tank.
The Ecuadorian president emphasized that he won the last elections against «a populist model that has been characterized by penetrating into power», adding that democracy, with independence of powers, has finally returned to the country.
Lasso, of the CREO Movement and of conservative and liberal ideology, took office last May 24 after the National Electoral Council (CNE) announced his victory in the second round of the elections against the Correista candidate Andres Arauz.
