The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrel, has condemned this Saturday »strongly» the launch of a long-range ballistic missile by North Korea.
»The repeated manifestations by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) of continuing to develop the means to launch weapons of mass destruction threaten international peace and security. The DPRK must cease all illegal and dangerous actions that violate UN Security Council resolutions and recklessly increase military tensions in the region,» Borrel said in a statement.
He also urged North Korea to return to »immediate» compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to ensure a »viable path to peace and security» on the Korean Peninsula and not to »waste resources» to the detriment of the »difficult living conditions of a large part of its population».
The European Union has called on the international community, especially the members of the Security Council, to implement the UN sanctions and to request North Korea to resume dialogue to end tensions in the region.
