German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has condemned Thursday night’s shooting in the city of Hamburg at a Jehovah’s Witnesses’ religious center, where at least seven people were killed.
It is an act of brutal violence,» said Scholz, who expressed that his thoughts »are with the victims and their families» of the attack in the Gross Borstel district.
»My thoughts are also with the security forces, who have had to face this difficult operation,» he said in a message on his Twitter account after police confirmed that the alleged perpetrator of the attack has been found lifeless inside the building.
However, the security forces are scheduled to give more details of the case at 11.00 (local time), during a press conference.
Preliminary information points to eight dead – including the attacker – and several wounded. The attack took place at around 9 p.m. on Thursday night, although the police reportedly received the first call about 15 minutes later.
The religious group has indicated in a statement that it feels »terribly sorry for the terrible attack perpetrated against its members in the Kingdom Hall in Hamburg during a religious ceremony». Our greatest support goes to the families of the victims and the witnesses, who are traumatized,» the statement said.
