The European Commission announced Wednesday that it will provide eleven million euros in humanitarian aid to Central America and Mexico to address the consequences of violence, strengthen education systems and support disaster preparedness activities.
The funds, announced on the occasion of the High-Level Solidarity Roundtable in support of the Humanitarian Response Plans for Northern Central America in 2023, include 3.5 million euros to help address the humanitarian consequences of violence, such as forced displacement, and food insecurity issues.
Also, 3 million euros will be dedicated to education in emergency situations and 4.5 million euros to support disaster preparedness activities in the region, which is exposed to natural hazards, epidemics, unrest, violence, poverty and inequality, the agency recalled.
The European Commission has highlighted that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and inflation are worsening people’s vulnerability and affecting their ability to cope with hardship, raising the risks of forced displacement, food insecurity and lack of protection, especially in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.
In this line, he recalled that the region is also a key point of migratory routes in Latin America and the Caribbean, while rural communities and ethnic minorities in the Dry Corridor bear the humanitarian consequences of frequent climatic shocks. Since 1994, the EU has allocated EUR 322 million in humanitarian aid to Central America and Mexico.
