The legal team of Hunter Biden — son of U.S. President Joe Biden — has finally rejected demands by Republicans on the House Oversight Committee to provide information about his business activities amid suspicions that he may have benefited from his father’s business contacts.
His lawyer, Abbe Lowell, has sent a letter to the chairman of this committee, James Comer, arguing that there is «no legitimate legislative purpose» for requesting the records of his client, who is no more than a «private citizen,» but has offered to meet with the committee «to see if Mr. Biden has information that might serve some legitimate legislative purpose.»
On Wednesday, Comer asked Hunter for information about his business dealings, especially those he signed in China and Ukraine, a country where his holdings in Burisma, a gas company, prompted Donald Trump to press President Volodimir Zelenski to find irregularities. That maneuver prompted the first of two political trials the tycoon faced during his term in office.
Comer has regretted the decision of Hunter, who could be summoned to testify by the commission after refusing to comply with these demands, and has accused the Biden family of «trying to obstruct the oversight work of Congress», in what has to do with the «suspicious business practices of his family», according to NBC.
«The American people demand transparency, not political cover-ups. The Oversight Committee will continue its oversight and will use every tool at its disposal to gather information for our investigation,» he has said.
With the arrival of Donald Trump in the White House, the accusations against Hunter have been a constant, although they have intensified in recent months after the Republicans regained control of the House.
In addition to his affairs with Burisma, Republicans have also put the spotlight on his business dealings in China when his father was Barack Obama’s vice president. Thus, Trump not only pressured Zelenski, but also Beijing to investigate possible irregularities.
Hunter Biden has also been in the news this week for a session of this commission in which three senior Twitter officials testified for the alleged accusations that this and other social networks would have acted to hide from their platforms references to a report by the tabloid ‘New York Post’ about the contents of one of their laptops.
Yoel Roth, former head and security of Twitter, acknowledged that while the company made a mistake in the treatment of that information, they had «limited information» and that at first glance there were «many similarities» with that of the Russian leak in the 2016 presidential campaign.
Those stories and rumors about the alleged contents of Hunter’s laptop were some of the trump cards used by Trump during the election campaign, and even in the television debates, to attack Joe Biden, whom he insistently reminded of all these theories.
