Turkish security forces have detained four people since Monday for alleged «provocative postings» on social media following powerful earthquakes that devastated parts of southern Turkey and northern Syria, according to Police.
The institution has not clarified the content of the messages posted, but has indicated that it is closely monitoring all allusions to the tragedy. In fact, it has already identified 90 users who allegedly seek to «create fear» among citizens, as stated in an official statement.
Turkey’s Parliament passed a controversial law in November that punishes the dissemination of false news with up to three years in prison. For the opposition and associations for the Defense of Human Rights, it is a censorship tool at the service of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
