No European country intends for the moment to reactivate its diplomatic presence in Yemen through the reopening of its consulates and embassies despite the request made in this regard by the Yemeni government.
Yemeni Foreign Minister Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak asked last Wednesday the European Union countries to consider reopening their diplomatic missions in the country as a gesture of support to the Yemeni government, displaced since the beginning of the war in the city of Aden.
The Yemeni government, formally known as the Presidential Leadership Council, has made it a key objective to strengthen diplomatic relations with the international community. As part of that initiative, it recently opened a Foreign Ministry headquarters in Aden and prepared a series of visits by European ambassadors led by the head of the EU mission for Yemen, Gabriel Munuera Viñals.
At the end of their visit last Thursday, the ambassadors reiterated their call to both the Yemeni government and the Huthi insurgency to reach a «constructive compromise» to reach a just agreement to end the war.
However, and according to European diplomatic sources, the Yemeni minister has not obtained from the ambassadors a pledge for the return of diplomatic missions to Yemen. «Right now no European country intends to open an embassy in Aden,» the daily ‘Asharq al Awsat’ reports.
