The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, has deactivated her personal Twitter profile, coinciding with a moment in which several users have been recalling old messages of hers on this social network criticizing the police repression that took place during the short-lived mandate of former president Manuel Merino.
The personal account of the president of Peru has appeared this Tuesday, January 31, deactivated. «This account does not exist,» it reads. According to sources to which the newspaper ‘La República’ has had access, Boluarte has decided to suspend her profile on this social network for personal reasons.
From now on, information related to the president and the activities of the Government will be released through the institutional channels of the Presidency of Peru.
The cancellation of the account takes place in a context of deep political and social crisis, with almost 60 deaths due to the repression of protests demanding Boluarte’s resignation, early elections, the closure of the Congress, the launching of a process to change the Constitution and the release of former President Pedro Castillo.
Throughout these weeks, several users have rescued some of the messages that Boluarte wrote in November 2020, in the midst of the protests against Merino for how he became President after the motion of censure against Martin Vizcarra. The repression of these protests left two dead, which accelerated his resignation after barely five days as president.
«Acción Popular Asesinos», was one of the messages written by Boluarte to express his rejection to Merino’s management of those protests.
Before that, in March 2019, the Peruvian president, then without any political office, questioned the honesty of the agents, stating that «finding a good policeman is like looking for a needle in a haystack».
«The police are respected, (…) but part of it is that they should not be abusive or coercive. We are tired of knowing that finding a good policeman is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Let the police do the job of being honest policemen,» he wrote.
