Memphis Police have removed another officer from his post for his alleged responsibility in the death of African-American Tyre Nichols, making him the seventh police officer to be terminated after the man died several days after being beaten while being stopped at a police checkpoint.
«The Memphis Police Department has opened an investigation into the officers involved in the death of Tyre Nichols. Seven police officers have been terminated,» the police force said in a message on its Twitter account.
The first five police officers were dismissed on January 20 after initial internal investigations, which confirmed that they used excessive force when arresting Nichols. They have already been charged with several crimes, including homicide and kidnapping.
Nichols, 29, was hospitalized on January 7 in critical condition and died three days later after being intercepted by a traffic patrol. The videos released show the beatings inflicted by the police on the young man, who was also subjected to electric shocks.
The authorities released last Friday images showing the group of police officers beating Nichols, which has provoked a new wave of protests against police brutality in cities such as Memphis, New York and Washington, among others.
