German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has stated in an interview that he will soon speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin, to which the Kremlin has replied that no call between the two leaders is scheduled in the Russian leader’s agenda.
«In recent months I have spoken with Putin again and again just as (French) President (Emmanuel) Macron has done. The last time in early December. And I will be on the phone with Putin again because it is necessary for us to talk,» Scholz said in an interview with the ‘Tagesspiegel’ newspaper.
«The tone of our telephone conversations is not rude, but it is clear that our views are completely different (…). But one thing is also clear: as long as Russia continues with the war and this aggression, the current situation does not change (…). Putin wants to forcibly annex parts of his neighboring country and that is absolutely unacceptable,» the German Chancellor reiterated.
In response, the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, stressed that for the moment there is no conversation with Scholz on Putin’s agenda, although he also indicated that the Russian leader «is open to contacts».
«So far there are no agreed telephone talks. Putin remains open to contacts,» Peskov said, according to the Russian news agency Interfax. Peskov thus explained that Moscow has not received any request from Berlin for a telephone conversation.
