U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday highlighted the U.S. Democratic Party’s commitment to abortion rights in a speech in Tallahassee, Florida, on the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
Harris criticized legislation in Florida, where last year the Republican majority passed a law banning abortions after 15 weeks gestation.
«The so-called leaders of the state House of Representatives here in Tallahassee passed a sweeping ban on abortion with no exceptions, not even for survivors of crimes like rape, child abuse or human trafficking,» she has lamented.
«Here in Florida, health care professionals face prison sentences of up to five years for simply doing their job. And now (state authorities) have even threatened pharmacists with criminal charges if they dispense (abortion) drugs,» Harris criticized.
In this sense, the vice-president pointed out that «Florida is not alone» because there are more than twenty states that limit access to prescription drugs for abortions.
«So today we are fighting back,» she announced, explaining that U.S. President Joe Biden has announced measures to facilitate the protection of abortion applicants.
Harris made this speech on the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that protected the legal right to abortion until the high court’s 6-3 conservative majority overturned it last year.
In the months since the Court overturned Roe, the battle over abortion rights has shifted to statehouses. Republican-led states have rushed to enact new restrictions on the procedure.
«We will not back down. We know this fight will not be won until we guarantee this right to all Americans,» she has asserted.
