Health experts from the EU-27 will meet this Wednesday in Brussels to discuss the coordination of possible requirements for entry into the European Union (EU) to control the arrival of travelers from China after the peak of Covid-19 infections in the Asian giant.

The Swedish Presidency of the Council has convened this meeting of the Integrated Policy Response to Crises (IPCR) mechanism after the lifting of exit restrictions from China, coupled with the increasing spread of COVID-19 in the country, has prompted the need for joint European action.

Several countries – mainly in Asia but also the United States and some European countries – have begun to require a negative coronavirus test or full vaccination schedule to allow entry of travelers from China, where there has been an explosion of infections in recent weeks following the lifting of most restrictions.

«The presidency is seeking a common EU approach to the possible introduction of entry requirements. It is important that we take the necessary measures quickly,» said Swedish Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health Jakob Forssmed.

The aim of the meeting, diplomatic sources have confirmed to Europa Press, is to discuss the Covid-19 situation in China and to discuss possible measures that the EU could take in a coordinated manner.

For its part, the Government of China has branded as «unacceptable» the measures already adopted by some countries to control the arrival of travelers from the country, claiming that there are no scientific arguments to justify the restrictions adopted by governments such as Spain.
