The Ukrainian Prosecutor’s Office reported Tuesday that a suspect attempted to steal graffiti of the famous artist Banksy painted on the facade of an abandoned building in Gostomel, on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.
The suspect, charged with an attempted robbery under martial law, intended to sell the graffiti, called ‘Woman with gas mask’, for its high value on the art market to later use the money «at his discretion».
The prosecution details that the suspect cut a part of the wall, with the help of several men, and wrapped the work in plastic wrap to protect it from possible damage. However, he did not have time to load it into the car, which was stolen, because he was discovered by military administration officials.
Last December, eight men between the ages of 27 and 60, residents of both Kiev and Cherkasi, had already attempted to steal the graffiti, Ukrinform reported Ukrainian capital police chief Andrii Nebitov as saying.
