The Government of Canada announced Wednesday a package of sanctions against Iran, the eleventh since October 2022, for its »continued violations» of human rights, this time targeting nine individuals and one entity.

Among the nine people targeted by the Canadian government are members of the so-called Morality Police, which is held responsible for the death of young Mahsa Amini, arrested for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly, which triggered a wave of protests across the country.

Those sanctioned include a deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, for the crackdown on protests in Sistan and Baluchestan province that left dozens dead, and the board of directors of Paravar Pars, a »key producer» of drones allegedly being used in the »unjustifiable» Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Finally, they have also included in this new battery of sanctions the Rajaei Shahr prison, located on the outskirts of the city of Karaj, in the north of Iran, and which would come to exemplify »the brutality of the regime» since within its walls »a record number of state executions» have been committed.

Canada’s commitment to human rights is unwavering and we will always give a voice to those who need our support, such as the women, men and children of Iran,» said Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly.

We will continue to do everything in our power to respond to the Iranian regime’s destabilizing actions, which affect not only the Iranian people, but have implications for global peace and security,» she added.

The sanctions join similar measures already announced by the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States. With them, the assets of those mentioned that they may have in any of these countries are frozen, while commercial dealings, or of any kind, with these individuals and entities are prohibited.
