The New Zealand authorities said Tuesday that they will make an initial delivery of 1.5 million New Zealand dollars (about 880,000 euros) in humanitarian aid to deal with the devastating consequences of earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, where more than 5,000 people have died.
The country’s Foreign Minister, Nanaia Mahuta, has indicated that Wellington will send this amount to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Turkey and Syria to help «meet the humanitarian needs» of the population.
«We are very saddened by the loss of human life and devastation caused by these earthquakes. Our thoughts are with the families and those affected,» he said, according to The New Zealand Herald.
In this sense, he pointed out that «this first contribution will be made», although the authorities will continue to monitor the humanitarian needs on the ground with a view to sending more assistance.
Of the total amount, two thirds will be sent to Turkey and one third of the aid will go to support teams in Syria for the purchase of essential materials such as tents, blankets, food and medicines, among others.
