The Colombian ambassador to Nicaragua, Leon Fredy Muñoz, confirmed on Tuesday the delivery of credentials to the president of the Central American country, Daniel Ortega, in order to «restore relations».
«As ambassador of Colombia in Nicaragua, in a protocol act, I delivered credentials to President Daniel Ortega,» Muñoz wrote on his Twitter profile, in a message he shared with several photographs.
«We reaffirm the commitment to recompose relations, carrying a message of change throughout Latin America, a task entrusted by the president, Gustavo Petro,» added the Colombian ambassador.
With the arrival of Petro to Casa Nariño, the Colombian State has launched a plan to reactivate and resume some of the diplomatic relations that were damaged by the stage of Iván Duque, critical of governments such as the Nicaraguan or Venezuelan.
With the arrival of Petro, Colombia will seek to retake that leadership, taking advantage of the fact that leftist governments have recovered the space lost in the continent. For the moment, it has already resumed ties with Venezuela, has opted for a review of relations with the United States and has emerged as one of the leaders of the region most critical of the arrest of former president Pedro Castillo in Peru.
President Ortega received on Monday the credentials of several ambassadors, among them those of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Honduras, Cuba, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Spain, Italy, Iran, South Korea, China, Japan, and even Abkhazia, a de facto independent republic, recognized by only a handful of countries.
