UN Secretary-General António Guterres has applauded the agreement between Serbia and Kosovo to normalize their relations and stressed that the parties must work »quickly» and »in good faith» to »materialize all their obligations under the agreement».

»The (UN) Secretary-General applauds the recent announcement by the European Union (EU) on an agreement between the parties on the implementation of the Agreement on the Road to Normalization of Relations between Belgrade and Pristina,» Guterres’ deputy spokesman Farhan Haq stressed.

Thus, he said that the materialization of the agreement »is in the interest of all» and pointed out that the international body »remains committed to support the implementation of the agreements emanating from the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina facilitated by the EU».

The agreement was reached on Saturday after a marathon 12-hour meeting mediated by the EU, EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell confirmed. »This agreement is an important step towards making it a reality. We will continue to work tirelessly until we reach a comprehensive agreement for the normalization of their relations,» he said.

Belgrade and Pristina have been negotiating for decades in Brussels with poor results and a poor record of implementation of the agreements already reached, weighed down by conflicts stemming from Kosovo’s violent secession from Serbia in the late 1990s.
