Authorities in Morocco have arrested a suspected member of the Islamic State jihadist group who was preparing a »serious attack against public order,» the African country’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (OCIJ) has reported.
The agency has indicated that the suspect was arrested in Safi (west) following information from the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) on the existence of a plan by the detainee to perpetrate an attack.
The man, whose identity has not been revealed, is said to have sworn allegiance to the Islamic State and to have identified several civil servants as targets, according to the authorities, who specified that he is a ‘lone wolf’, as reported by the Moroccan state news agency MAP.
The statement was published after the arrest on Wednesday of three alleged members of the jihadist group for their role in the death of a policeman as part of a plan to «seriously undermine public order».
The detainees allegedly swore allegiance to the Islamic State and took part in the murder of a police officer in order to seize his weapon with the aim of robbing a bank to commit a robbery. The attackers allegedly mutilated the officer after his murder and then set fire to his body and vehicle in an attempt to conceal the evidence of the crime.
