The U.S. State Department announced Thursday the approval of the sale to Poland of more than 800 Hellfire missiles, as well as related equipment, for an estimated value of $150 million (141 million euros).

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency on Thursday delivered the required certification notifying Congress of the potential sale, after the Polish government requested the purchase of 800 AGM-114R2 Hellfire missiles and four M36 Hellfire airborne training missiles (CATMs), the State Department said in a statement.

Also included is technical assistance from the U.S. Armed Forces for the use of the missiles, as well as for the repair, storage and logistical support of the missiles »This proposed sale will support U.S. foreign policy goals and national security objectives by enhancing the security of a NATO ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe,» the release read.

The sale, according to Washington, will enhance Poland’s military objectives of upgrading its capabilities while improving interoperability with the United States and other Atlantic Alliance allies.

»Poland intends to use these defense articles and services to modernize its Armed Forces and expand its capabilities to strengthen its national defense and deter regional threats,» the State Department has detailed.

The prime contractor will be Lockheed Martin Corporation, headquartered in Orlando, Florida. The sale will not alter the basic military balance in the region, the United States has assured.
