Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized Wednesday that Ukraine belongs to the European Union, during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski, who thanked him for the Nordic country’s support despite government changes.
On an official visit to Kiev, Kristersson stressed that Ukraine’s European aspirations are always welcome and therefore «Sweden will continue to offer all possible support», he said.
This is Kristersson’s first visit to Ukraine after being appointed Swedish Prime Minister in October 2022. «It is important to meet in person at the scene and see with your own eyes the terrible consequences of Russia’s unjustified and provoked aggression,» he said, reports Swedish public broadcaster SVT.
For his part, President Zelenski referred to the upcoming trip of his American counterpart Joe Biden to Poland on the occasion of the first anniversary of the Russian invasion, leaving the door open to the possibility of meeting him again, but this time on Ukrainian soil, Ukrinform agency reports.
«They already know that we have invited the president and when he has the opportunity he will be happy to come to Ukraine,» said Zelenski, for whom such a visit would be an «important sign of support» for the Ukrainian people. In the meantime, he stressed that they have «several channels of communication» with the head of the White House.
Likewise, Zelenski also assessed the situation in some fronts, such as Bajmut, where he recognized that Ukraine has «the most difficult situation» it has been facing since the beginning of the war.
«The fortress is alive,» he has said in reference to Bajmut. «This war is being costly for the history of our state, but the people are strong, they are defending themselves firmly, they stand up, they understand that they are a fortress for Ukraine to prepare for the vacating of all territories,» he has confided.
They stand firm, fulfill their task and destroy (…) this is the most important thing, the destruction of as many enemies as possible (…) It is difficult, but they are holding on», the Ukrainian president praised.
