Japanese health authorities announced Saturday that more than 10,000 people have died in the country as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, a monthly record number of deaths in the country since the arrival of COVID-19 at its borders.
The 252 deaths in the last few hours confirmed on Saturday bring the total death toll in January to 10,124, according to a tally published by Japan’s official Kyodo news agency.
The country has been going through a very dangerous period since November, with an increase in the number of infections and deaths not seen in previous months. In December, it should be recalled, more than 7,600 people died, a record number at that time.
The country has also recorded a further 54,780 new infections in the last few hours, 533 of which are serious, although the infection curve has been falling since the middle of the month.
