A court in Egypt has sentenced to death a man who killed his former fiancée in October 2022 after she refused to marry him, amid rising popular outrage over sexist killings in the African country.
The man murdered Julud el Said, 20, at his home in Port Said, after investigations determined that he did so after she broke off their engagement because of his «excessive jealousy» and «controlling attitude,» Egyptian daily ‘Al Ahram’ has reported.
The prosecution has presented during the trial a phone call from El Said to a friend whom she asked for help and in which the man is heard threatening to kill her. In addition, 18 witnesses have affirmed that the young woman had received threats from her ex-partner.
Another witness also said that he saw the accused enter the young woman’s home through the balcony on the night of the murder, which was confirmed by security cameras installed in the vicinity.
The sentence is the third death sentence for such cases in Egypt in recent months. In June, a man murdered student Nayera Ashraf in public for refusing his marriage request. The young woman was stabbed and her throat slit on the campus of Mansura University.
Subsequently, university student Salma Bahgat was similarly murdered in broad daylight at the entrance of a building in the city of Zagazig, capital of Sharqiya governorate, after also rejecting a marriage proposal from the man who subsequently killed her.
