The Taliban fundamentalist movement on Sunday expressed its revulsion following the leak of a US Department of Defense assessment that points to Afghanistan as a new center of jihadist insurgency, led by the Afghan affiliate of the Islamic State, since the extremists’ return to power.

A new batch of Pentagon documents leaked allegedly by National Guard member Jack Teixeira indicated that the group is already planning, with the participation of its Afghan affiliate, attacks against Europe and Asia, and aims to do the same in the United States.

In response, the Taliban deputy information minister and chief spokesman of the movement, Zabiullah Mujahid, has assured that this report is nothing more than a »false document published by the US Department of Defense» and »a piece of propaganda».

We strongly reject this claim. Afghanistan has become a peaceful country at the regional level», added Muyahid before assuring that an example of this was the Eid al Fitr, the celebration of the end of Ramadan, which according to the spokesman has passed without incident.

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has total control over the country and does not allow anyone to use Afghanistan against the security of any other country,» said Muyahid, who assured, in particular, that the Afghan affiliate of the Islamic State »has been seriously affected» by the Taliban operations and that it is in the »process of eradication».

The Taliban regime considers the Islamic State as a terrorist organization, contrary to its precepts, and since its coming to power has undertaken some operations against its hideouts.

This has not prevented the jihadist organization from perpetrating bloody attacks since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, with a suicide bombing in Kabul during the international evacuation process that left 170 Afghans and 13 US military personnel dead, or in the following months against the country’s Shiite minority.
