Iran’s Ministry of Education announced Monday that it will expel from educational institutions all those who do not comply with the Islamic dress code, putting the focus on the use of hijab, as well as the »culture of chastity», among female students.

Tehran points out the need to »familiarize» and »institutionalize» the use of the hijab and this »culture of chastity», so it has put in the hands of the educational centers the task of internalizing these two concepts among the students, according to the communiqué of Education reported by the Mehr news agency.

»Having a broader vision of the cultural components and the ways to institutionalize them, including the issue of hijab and chastity, is one of the most important challenges in the intellectual and cultural system,» the text says.

Education has set a series of mandatory rules for schools, asking school leaders and teachers to collaborate not only in disseminating these ideas about the hijab and chastity as fundamental values of Iranian society, but also to monitor compliance with them.

The teaching of sharia — Islamic law — on chastity and hijab promotes a »positive discourse» and »beautiful thinking» about their use. Explaining the »Iranian Islamic way of life» or familiarizing students with »destructive programs» and »conspiracies» of the West are some of the standards Tehran has set for educational centers.

The new imposition by Iranian authorities is in response to the protests that erupted in September 2022, in which thousands of people demonstrated to defy the strict dress regulations imposed by the ayatollahs, after young Mahsa Amini died in police custody after being arrested for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly.

The dress code for women has become a source of intense debate within Iranian society, where the more traditionalist sectors have threatened to take action if the government did not curb an alleged relaxation of the rules, especially in large cities.

In parallel to the publication of this statement, the Minister of Education, Yousef Noori, submitted his resignation, which was accepted by the Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi, although it is related to the delay in salary payments, a little more than two weeks before the Persian New Year.

Raisi has appointed the dean of Farhangian University, Reza Moradsahraei, as the new head of Education, while he has asked the first vice-president, Mohammad Mokher, to investigate any possible irregularity behind the delay in payments to teachers, reports IRNA news agency.
