The UN Security Council has called for a cessation of hostilities between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and several armed groups in the face of increased violence in the North Kivu and Ituri region.
The head of the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), Bintou Keita, assured the members of the Security Council that the humanitarian situation has continued to deteriorate due to the clashes between the DRC Army and the various armed groups operating in the country, such as the March 23 Movement (M23), Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO) and Zaire.
Keita reported that the conflict continues to cause »intolerable suffering» to the civilian population, and urged to join efforts to bring peace and stability to the region, according to a statement.
Likewise, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has stated that the education of some 750,000 children has been interrupted in North Kivu and Ituri alone, and noted that at least 2,100 schools have closed since January last year due to insecurity in the region.
In recent weeks there has been an increase in clashes between the DRC and the various armed militias operating in the country, forcing hundreds of people to flee their homes.
