U.S. State Department representative Vedant Patel condemned Thursday at a press conference that Burma’s military regime has dissolved 40 political parties for elections the junta intends to call in August 2023.
Any election without the participation of all stakeholders in Burma cannot be considered free or fair», explained Patel, adding that »given the strong opposition to the regime’s unilateral decision, instability is likely to grow».
He concluded by saying that they will always support all »efforts» of those who seek »genuine and inclusive» democracy in the country.
Just this Tuesday the National League for Democracy (NLD), the formation headed by the detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi, was dissolved after it failed to register.
This is due to a law passed this January by which parties that fail to register within 60 days will be dissolved, as part of measures that are intended to increase the control of the current authorities over the entire political spectrum of the country.
