The Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz acknowledged that he has the «good goal» from this Friday to «win Indian Wells and return to number one in the world», although he said he does not see himself as a «favorite» to succeed in the first Masters 1000 of the season.
«I feel really good right now. I took some days off and it was really good for me. Right now I’m ready,» he said from the Californian tournament where he is making his comeback after the hamstring injury in the Rio de Janeiro final.
The Spaniard was absent in Acapulco but returns recovered and eager to continue the good dynamic of 2023 that began with the title in Buenos Aires. Alcaraz makes his debut this Friday against Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis in search of his third Masters 1000 and the number one against Novak Djokovic, who is not vaccinated against covid.
«It’s a really good goal for me. Of course, playing a Masters 1,000 is always difficult and I really want to have a good result here. I also love this tournament. For me, to win the tournament and to be number one again is a really good goal and I’m really looking forward to it,» he said.
The world No. 2 climbed to the top of the ATP rankings in September last year with his US Open title and remains in that fight although he doesn’t see himself as a favorite in Indian Wells. «On hard court I think I’m a very good tennis player, so I’m going to try,» he said.
«I don’t consider myself a favorite to win the tournament because it’s been a long time since I’ve played on hard court. Of course, there are many great players who have a chance to win. I would say I have my chances to win the tournament and I’m going to try to take them,» he finished.
