The leader of the Just Russia (SR) party, Sergei Mironov, has called on Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to suspend the cooperation agreement between the government and the World Health Organization (WHO).
«The Just Russia faction (…) in the State Duma points out that in recent years the WHO’s activities have shifted towards politicization and serving the financial interests of pharmaceutical companies,» Mironov has asserted.
The legislator has related that he «considers it appropriate» to propose the suspension of the cooperation agreement, in line with the measures taken by the WHO since the war began in Ukraine, starting from February 2022.
Thus, Mironov has detailed that WHO suspended in May the activities carried out by the European Office for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases based in Moscow.
According to him, this fact «confirms» that the objectives of the organization in protecting the health of the world’s population «are closely related» to politics.
However, despite the fact that some WHO member states suggested in May to move one of the organization’s offices to another European country, none of them has closed, nor has Russia expelled the organization, sources in the agency confirmed over the summer to various media.
«The claims are false,» a spokesperson told USA TODAY, before adding that «WHO continues to operate in the Russian Federation, both through the national headquarters and the Office of Noncommunicable Diseases.»
