The Russian government has assured Wednesday that its forces have managed to «break through» Ukrainian Army defenses in a «wooded area» in the Lugansk region (east), in the framework of an offensive reinforced during the last weeks by Russian troops in this area of the country.

The Russian Defense Ministry has indicated that its troops «have broken through the enemy’s staggered defense in a wooded area in the Lugansk People’s Republic,» before adding that Ukrainian troops «have withdrawn randomly to a distance of three kilometers from the previously occupied lines.»

«Even the enemy’s second, more fortified line of defense could not resist the offensive of the Russian military personnel,» he said, while stressing that the Ukrainian forces «hastily left their positions, without time to take military equipment,» Russian news agency Interfax reported.

He also said that «while covering their retreat, the Ukrainian Armed Forces remotely mined the area with anti-personnel mines of a type used by NATO». «Despite this, the forces successfully dug in on the occupied lines and have continued offensive operations,» he has outlined.
