The German Armed Forces have started on Monday the training of Ukrainian military in the handling of the Leopard 2 battle tank, after Berlin has promised Kiev fourteen of these tanks to face the Russian invasion, unleashed on February 24, 2022 on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The training will mainly take place at the tank school in the Lower Saxony town of Munster and is expected to be completed before the end of the first quarter so that the transfer of the tanks can also take place in a «synchronized» manner, according to a Defense Ministry spokesman quoted by the German news agency DPA.
The training program has started after Berlin initiated the training of Ukrainian soldiers in the use of the Marder infantry fighting vehicle, in the framework of the German support to the Ukrainian Army, which will include the delivery of more than one hundred Leopard 1 tanks, the old model of these battle tanks, from several countries of the European Union.
The delivery of the Leopard 2 tanks was confirmed at the end of January by the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, after days of speculation about the position that Berlin would finally adopt and Kiev’s repeated requests to receive this type of armament. Following this, the German Executive explained that it will deliver fourteen Leopard 2A6s in the German Armed Forces’ arsenal.
