UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned Monday that the conflict in Ukraine is heading for a «wider war» globally as the likelihood of the parties reaching peace diminishes.

«Prospects for peace continue to diminish. The possibility of further escalation and bloodshed continues to grow,» he asserted in a speech to the organization’s General Assembly in which he lamented that «the world is walking with its eyes wide open towards a wider war.»

In this sense, he has affirmed that the Russian invasion is «inflicting incalculable pain on the Ukrainian people, which carries profound implications at the global level.» «The world needs peace. A peace that conforms to the United Nations Charter and international law,» he said, before stressing that «we must work harder to achieve these goals».

Thus, he stressed that if «each country fulfills its obligations within the framework of this Charter, the right to peace would be guaranteed». «When these principles are violated, a world of insecurity is created for everyone,» he denounced.

That is why Guterres has called for strengthening diplomacy and stressed the importance of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, the agreement reached in July 2022 between Ukraine and Russia to allow the resumption of grain exports through Ukrainian ports and which «has yielded good results even in the midst of a bloody war.»
